Those such as Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, Patsy Mink to Malala Yousafzai, Sylvia Mendez to Sarah Winnemucca, Mahsa Jina Amini to Ruth Bader Ginsburg…. The world as we know it was built through a series of inventors and inventions. Brilliant minds have given us gadgets that quite literally shape the way that we interact with the world and one another every single day. Here are a few inventors that have made a difference to enhance my life!
The Computer-Grace Brewster, American Computer Scientist: was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral. One of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, she was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first linkers. Hopper was the first to devise the theory of machine-independent programming languages, and the Flow Matic programming language she created using this theory was later extended to create COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today.
The Dishwasher-Josephine Cochrane: Josephine Garis Cochran was an American inventor who was the inventor of the first successful hand-powered dishwasher, which she designed, and then constructed with the assistance of mechanic George Butters, who became one of her first employees.
Spanx- Sara Blakely: Born in Clearwater, Fl. In 1971. Graduated from Florida State University. Sara is an American businesswoman and philanthropist. She is the founder of Spanx, an American intimate apparel company with pants and leggings, founded in Atlanta, Ga. In 2012, Blakely was named in Time magazine’s Time 100 annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world In 2014, she was listed as the 93rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes. Blakely also landed the cover of Forbes magazine for being the youngest self-made Female Billionaire in the World.
Beauty Blender Make-up Application Sponge-Rea Ann Silva: Born in 1961, is the creator of the Beauty blender makeup application sponge and the founder and CEO of the Beauty blender company. Silva created the sponge while working as a make-up artist for the Girlfriends television series. In 2019, her company& sales were expected to reach $215 million.
The Fitness Mirror-Brynn Putnam: Brynn Putnam born in 1983 and a former professional ballet dancer (The Nutcracker) is the founder and CEO of MIRROR. In 2016 while pregnant Brynn became the inventor of a fitness technology company poised to revolutionize the way people work out by bringing the boutique studio experience in-home. On the day her son was born Brynn signed her first round of seed funding, which was $3 million from First Round Capital. Two yrs. after closing the first fundraising round, MIRROR launched in 2018. For more than a decade, Brynn has been well-regarded as a pioneer of the fitness industry. In September 2019 Lululemon bought the company from Mrs. Putnam now 37 for $500 Million Dollars, while keeping her on as Mirrors CEO.
As a member of The Florida Executive Women Organization, I am honored and privileged to be a woman of Impact and Influence for the greater good our Community, State, Nation, and Family. As for me, my ultimate acknowledge goes to “My Beautiful Mother”, who taught me to Strive for Excellence while carrying someone else on my shoulders along the way.
