DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us as we continue our DEI conversations. \nThe Bias Diagnosis examines the disparity in outcomes between white and minority ethic patients. The podcast host\, scrutinizes the racial inequalities in healthcare systems\, from cancer treatment to mental health care system\, due in large part to the centuries of myths and falsehoods in medicine\, or assumptions about the validity of minority ethnic patient’s pain and other symptoms. \nShould you wish to participate\, please listen to the podcast The Bias Diagnosis\, a 5-part podcast series available with a free 30-day trial on Audible.  After 30 days there is a nominal charge to continue but you can cancel anytime.  We will only discuss episode 1 in our first meeting on August 18\, but you are welcome to listen to all 5 episodes prior to our meeting. \nAs we prepare to discuss this enlightening topic\, Katie Seymour shared her thoughts below: \nOur mission is to learn from the materials and each other…not necessarily to all agree!  Reasonable people disagree!  We have different political party affiliations\, we’ve been impacted by different areas of the country or even the world where we’ve lived.  We have different policy perspectives–liberal\, America First\, conservative or neo conservative.  So we invite you to listen to other views\, express your view\, and grow and learn….but we do not need to reach a consensus. \nWe hope that you can join our discussion. Please register so that we can send you the Zoom link prior to August 18. Should you have any questions please reach out to Debra Hendrickson dhendrickson2620@gmail.com or 407-252-2528

SUMMARY:Say This\, Not That
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Jennifer Sandoval Ph.D.\nCo-Director and Inclusive Culture Lead at UCF\nWords matter. They have enormous power to lift up\, but also to cause harm. For many of us who have always had language to define and describe our identities\, we might not recognize the incredible privilege in that. For those who care about recognizing the dignity of all people across intersectional identities\, it can also feel overwhelming to keep up with the pace of change in inclusive language. In our conversation\, we will break down some basic inclusive language principles and explore specific examples of the evolution of language for the LGBTQIA+ community. Bring all your questions and a spirit of curiosity! \nSponsored by the FEW DE&I committee.  \nCLICK HERE to download event flyer. \nAbout Jennifer\nJennifer Sandoval is an Associate Professor at the Nicholson School of Communication and Media at the University of Central Florida and a campus leader for equity and inclusion. She has a PH.D. in Communication and Culture from the University of New Mexico and a Master’s of Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine School of Law. Her research focuses on the intersections of identity and power in complex contexts like healthcare and education. Dr. Sandoval works with a wide range of organizations\, enhancing their capacity to communicate across differences and difficulties. She is also an active leader in the United Faculty of Florida and a community advocate for labor rights and reproductive justice.

SUMMARY:Combating Antisemitism Through Education
DESCRIPTION:Talli will share her grandmother’s story of resilience during the Holocaust\, the importance of education in combating antisemitism\, and honoring the legacy of Holocaust survivors to create a better future. \nWhy April: April 18\, 2023 is Holocaust Remembrance Day also called Yom Hashoah. It marks the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943\, when Jewish resistance fighters defied the Nazis and fought for freedom and dignity. The Holocaust was the largest manifestation of antisemitism in recent history. Yom HaShoah reminds us of the horrors that Jews and other persecuted groups faced: forced labor\, starvation\, humiliation\, and torture\, which often resulted in death. It was a systematic effort to wipe out an entire population from the face of the earth. \nAbout Talli \nTalli Dippold was the Stan Greenspon Director of Holocaust Education Fellowship Program and the Associate Director of the Stan Greenspon Holocaust and Social Justice Education Center. Previously\, she was the Executive Director of the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library & Resource Center at Shalom Park. \nTalli received a BS in Hospitality Management from the University of New Hampshire and her MS in Genocide and Holocaust Studies from Gratz College. After many years in the hospitality industry\, she changed her focus and pursued her lifelong passion for Judaism and Holocaust studies. During the past decade\, Talli traveled extensively throughout Eastern Europe and participated in numerous educational opportunities\, including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Belfer Conference\, The Prestigious Holocaust\, and Jewish Resistance Teachers Program\, as well as the Hillel International Professionals’ Heritage Study Tour in Poland. She has been an active member of the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust since 2013\, an Executive Board Member of the Association of Holocaust Organizations (AHO)\, and a new member of Jewish Heritage North Carolina board. \n\nTalli is a 3G (third-generation Holocaust survivor)\, as all her grandparents are Holocaust survivors and a native of Jerusalem. Talli enjoys traveling with her husband and three grown children when she is not working.DEADLINE TO RESERVE AND CANCEL LUNCH \n\nReservations must be received by Thursday (12 p.m.) prior to the luncheon.\nCancellations MUST be submitted in writing\, by email\, prior to the cancellation deadline. Cancellations after the deadline and no shows will be invoiced.
